Application Process - Masters

This is a two-step application process.Ìý

Step 1:ÌýStudents are asked to first fill out ourÌýIntent to Apply Form byÌýSunday, March 9th 2025, 11:59 PM. This form will constitute a letter of intent and will help our team plan for the review process.Ìý

Step 2:ÌýStudents will then have untilÌýSunday, March 16th 2025, 11:59 PMÌýto fill out the Fellowship’s Application Form.Ìý

Preparing for the Application FormÌý

The Masters application form requires the following information and documents. Applicants must carefully follow the instructions below, as incomplete or improperly submitted applications may be removed from the selection process.

Section 1: Student Information

  • Full name and preferred name (if applicable);

  • Preferred pronouns;

  • º«¹úÂãÎè email;

  • º«¹úÂãÎè ID;

  • Personal email address (in case we cannot reach your º«¹úÂãÎè email address);

  • Faculty & Department/Program;

  • Expected graduation date (if you are unsure of the exact date, please put the semester and year of graduation);

  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies (to be attached in PDF format);

  • Most recent CV (to be attached in PDF format);

  • Reference assessments: Attach two reference letters (in PDF format) from individuals who are familiar enough with your research and other abilities that they can provide a meaningful commentary. Examples: current or previous academic research supervisor, industrial supervisor, employment/volunteer supervisor, teacher or thesis advisor;

  • Acknowledgment:ÌýBy submitting this form, you confirm that the information provided is accurate to the best of your knowledge. You also acknowledge that summary details about your research project (if awarded) may be shared on our website and social media platforms.

  • McCAIS Event Acknowledgment:ÌýyouÌýackowledge that (if awarded) you are expected to present your research at the Annual McCAIS Symposium in Fall 2025.Ìý

Section 2: Supervisor Information

Applicants are required to have a minimum of two advisors from different disciplines to encourage interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI & Society. Your advisors will serve as your guide and mentor throughout your research.

For each supervisor, you must provide us with their:

  • Full Name;

  • º«¹úÂãÎè Email;

  • Faculty & Department/Program;

  • Areas of Expertise;

  • Most recent CVs (in PDF format).

Section 3: Research Project Proposal

You must upload your proposal as a single attachment in PDF format. The single attachment must consist of two sections: a) the outline of the proposed research, and b) the bibliography and citations.

Warning: Each section must be one page only. Applications with excess pages may be removed from the selection process.

a) The outline of the proposed research (one page only)

You must provide a detailed description of your proposed research project, and you are encouraged to be as specific as possible. The following questions can help you prepare your outline:

  • What is your proposed research topic and why do you believe it should be selected?

  • What domains of research are represented in your project and why?

  • Provide background information to position your proposed research within the context of current knowledge in the field.

  • State the objectives and hypothesis and outline the experimental or theoretical approach to be taken, and the methods and procedures to be used.

  • What challenges will be faced when achieving your objective(s)?

  • State the significance of the proposed research to the field you have selected and how it will further research on the impact of AI on Society.

  • What approach (i.e., research program) and/or mechanisms (i.e., organization strategy, workshops, etc.) would you propose to face these challenges?

  • Specify your proposed budget and budget justification.

Proposal format and presentation

Your Research Project Proposal must be in PDF format and follow the requirements below:

  • Acronyms and abbreviations must be spelled out completely on initial appearance in text;

  • Pages must be 8 ½" x 11" (216mm x 279mm);

  • Pages must be single-spaced, with no more than six lines of type per inch;

  • All text must be in 12 pt. Times New Roman font;

  • Condensed fonts will not be accepted;

  • Colour imagery is acceptable, but the text should be in black;

  • All margins must be set at a minimum of ¾" (1.87 cm);

  • Do not introduce hyperlinks or bookmarks in your documents.
