The BMO Responsible AI Fellowships are intended to help prepare future-ready Responsible artificial intelligence (AI) graduate-level researchers. They do so by encouraging research aimed at understanding and responsibly influencing the impact of AI on Society, necessarily drawing on not only technological aspects but also those related (but not limited) to arts, decision making, health, law and policy.Â
Established in 2021 with a gift from the BMO Financial Group, they are awarded by the º«¹úÂãÎè Collaborative for AI & Society (McCAIS), on behalf of the Faculty of Science. These awards promote work that transcends traditional academic disciplines, thereby encouraging innovative solutions to complex problems. Â
These fellowships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence to approximately three to six research Masters and/or PhD students in research in the field of Responsible AI. PhD students will be supported for a two-year period, and Masters students,  for a one –year period.Â
During the research phase, it is the responsibility of the students and supervisors to make sure that the research is being conducted in a responsible manner (e.g., uphold the academic integrity of the University, comply with all policies on research ethics and procedures governing use of human subjects (if any) and data management).Â
