Opera º«¹úÂãÎè celebrates 60 years with a dazzling Fledermaus

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera º«¹úÂãÎè, the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus in the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lefèvre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier. Â

Grammy Award for Nick Squire
Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon.  The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor  Andris Nelsons.Â

Boudreau and Bartók: Classics of their Time

This year, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) marks its 50th anniversary and Schulich students will be playing a major part in the celebrations. Notably, the º«¹úÂãÎè Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) is set to perform parts of Walter Boudreau’s Berliner Momente under direction of the composer himself on the opening night of the SMCQ’s Montréal/New Musiques Festival 2017.

Montreal is crowned the world's top student city

There’s already plenty to celebrate during Montreal’s 375th anniversary year, and now there’s yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world’s number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.

Prof. Edward Klorman a 2017 PROSE Award Recipient
Professor Edward Klorman has received the 2017 PROSE Award in the category of Music and the Performing Arts for his book Mozart’s Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works, published by Cambridge University Press.  The annual PROSE Awards recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in 53 categories.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has  announced the nominees for the 46th Annual JUNO Awards and this year Schulich faculty, alumni and former faculty are well-represented in the lists of finalists. Opus Prize winners announced
The 20th annual Conseil Québecois de la musique Gala was held on Sunday, February 5th, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.  Under the artistic direction of Alain Gauthier, Québec's musical community gathered to celebrate the artists, performers, musical ensembles, cultural organizations, composers and musicologists who have shone across the province and beyond over the past year.  Once again, there were many awards distributed to members of the Schulich community.

Sam Newsome: ‘Some things just are’

Aujourd’hui, les paradigmes ont changé. On ne va plus à Opera º«¹úÂãÎè pour dénicher des talents d’ici, dont les meilleurs iront ensuite à l’Atelier d’opéra avant de se faire entendre à l’international. On y entend une panoplie de gens venus de partout pour étudier à Montréal. Ils donnent un spectacle de niveau souvent quasiment professionnel.
Schulich Brass named to semi-finals in the National Trumpet Competition
The º«¹úÂãÎè Trumpet Ensemble, let by Professor Richard Stoelzel, has advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition to be held in March 2017 in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Francis LaPorte and Brent Proseus have advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division.Â

Rashaan Allwood Prizewinner in the Wadden International Organ Competition
Rashaan Allwood, a student of Professor Hans-Ola Ericsson, was awarded second prize at the Wadden International Organ Competition in Denmark this past weekend.  HIs award of 75.000 Danish Krona is approximately $14,000 Canadian.  “I am indeed very proud of  Rashaan whose shows exceptional hard work,talent, and determination," said Prof.
