Alana Klein and Nandini Ramanujam to co-direct Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Alana Klein has been appointed co-director of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP). She began her three-year appointment on 1 July 2024, succeeding Professor Frédéric Mégret, who completed his term as co-director in June.

Professor Nandini Ramanujam was reappointed as co-director and program director for a three-year term, starting 1 July 2024.

New co-director joins Crépeau Centre leadership

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Michelle Cumyn will join the leadership team of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. She will team up with current director Professor Mark Antaki, BCL’96, LLB’96, who has been at the helm of the renowned centre since 2020. They will serve as co-directors until 2026.

Daniel Weinstock elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Daniel Weinstock, CM, FRSC, has been named a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).  

Elected by their peers, fellows of the RSC are distinguished Canadians from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities, and the sciences, as well as in public life. Professor Weinstock was elected to the RSC’s Academy of Arts and Humanities.

Sarah Riley Case wins CALT Scholarly Paper award

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Sarah Riley Case has received the Scholarly Paper Award of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers (CALT). Her paper “To Protest for Black Life during the Pandemic: Resistance and Freedom in a Settler State” won the annual competition.

The overarching goal of the Essay Competition is to advance research and foster informed debate on federalism.  Essays are evaluated by a jury comprised of world renown experts on federalism.

Named in honour of the late professor and former dean John W. Durnford (BCL'52), and conferred by students, this annual award recognizes a law professor’s exceptional pedagogy.

Dean Robert Leckey receives CBA Hero Award

We are delighted to announce that the Sexual and Gender Diversity Alliance Section (SAGDA) of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) recognized Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E, with its Hero Award on 16 July 2024.

This prestigious award recognizes excellence within the Canadian legal profession in advancing the cause of equality for LGBTQ2+ people.

New professorial hire at the Faculty

We are delighted to announce that Jonathan Chan will join the Faculty of Law as an assistant professor on 1 August 2024. An expert in law and finance, he will begin by teaching Securities Regulation and Introduction to Corporate Transactions in winter 2025.

97.3% pass rate on Quebec bar school exams for Law grads, best in Quebec

It is with great pride that the Faculty of Law has learned that the Law cohort earned top place at the École du Barreau’s exams for 2022-2023. A remarkable 97.3% of Law graduates without preparatory courses passed the assessments, as did 100% of the graduates who took preparatory courses. This outstanding result was achieved in a particularly strong year, in which all law schools saw increases to their pass rates.

Law ranked 28th best worldwide, up one rank

The Faculty of Law was once again ranked among the world’s top universities at which to study law by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Law and Legal Studies placed Law 28th worldwide, up one spot from 2023.

Dean Robert Leckey receives honorary Scarlet Key

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E, has received an honorary Scarlet Key from ’s century-old Scarlet Key Society. He was presented with the award at the Society’s annual key-pinning ceremony on 20 March.
