Connected Academics Exchanges are sponsored groups that meet regularly to share resources, discuss research, and create meaningful connections between graduate students.
PRAXIS
PRAXIS is a weekly co-working and professional development opportunity hosted by the English Graduate Student Association. Beginning January 10th, 2025, join fellow graduate students every Friday from 10h-12h in Arts B-22 to exchange ideas, build community, and learn from one another over coffee and snacks. This open, drop-in style meeting time presents an opportunity for graduate students to share resources, write in community, and receive feedback on ideas and developing research. If you want feedback on a new idea, a second pair of eyes on a chapter draft, or simply want to work in the presence of others, PRAXIS is for you.
In addition to weekly conversations and co-working opportunities, faculty members from the English department will lead informal workshops one to two times per month. These workshops focus on some aspect of professional development to help both MAs and PhDs develop their CVs and gain employable skills. Occasionally, upper-level doctoral students host additional sessions to share firsthand experience with the job market, course lecturing, and publishing.
Faculty workshops scheduled for Winter 2025 are as follows:
- January 31st: “Conference Papers and Presentations” with Prof. Alexander Manshel
- February 7th: “Academic Publishing: Journals and Book Reviews” with Prof. Sandeep Banerjee and Prof. Miranda Hickman
- February 14th: “Creative Writing Workshop with a focus on Poetry” with PhD students Yusuf Saadi and Jay Ritchie
- March 14th: “Creative Practice in Academia” with Prof. Ned Schantz and Prof. Erin Hurley
- April 4th: “The Job Talk” with Prof. Amber Rose Johnson
