MONTREAL GAZETTE | Montreal girl, 6, explores the sky with astrophysicist

Published: 30 August 2019

“I wanted to meet a specialist of the sky, the stars and the night,” said six-year-old Zoey, who was introduced to astrophysicist and professor Victoria Kaspi at the Mont-Mégantic Observatory in Notre-Dame-des-Bois last week.

“When I was Zoey’s age, I knew very little about astronomy and had no idea one could have a career in this area,” Kaspi said in an email interview after spending the day with the Montreal student.

And that — opening up a broader world of career choices to girls — was the idea behind a Mattel and National Geographic partnership that features the launch of five new Barbies, each representing a scientific field in which women are underrepresented. The dolls come with accessories — a telescope and star map in the case of Astrophysicist Barbie — that have been vetted by a group of female National Geographic Explorers.

“I think normalizing that astrophysics (or any science) is something a female can do is important throughout society, at every age. One step toward doing that is using a toy like Barbie that tends to be very popular among little girls.”
