What is CGPSS?
CGPSS is one of two comprehensive surveys of graduate students at º«¹úÂãÎè. The survey is administered at the (CRIÉVAT), based at Université Laval, and has been run at º«¹úÂãÎè and other Canadian higher education institutions every three years since 2007. This year, some 50 Canadian institutions of higher education will participate.
The survey asks for your feedback on important aspects of the graduate student experience, including:
- Satisfaction with your program
- Professional skills development
- Research experience
- Presentations and publications
- Graduate supervision
- Financial supportÂ
- University resources and student life
- Social life
This year, the survey also includes ten º«¹úÂãÎè-specific questions on graduate student funding and cost of living from the (±Ê³Ò³§³§).Ìý
Why is it important?
CGPSS is a key indicator of the quality of the graduate student experience at º«¹úÂãÎè and across the country. º«¹úÂãÎè uses CGPSS results to advocate for graduate students, develop new initiatives and programming and evaluate the impact of our efforts to improve the graduate student experience.
What has º«¹úÂãÎè done with past CGPSS results?
- Advocate for graduate student funding: In 2023, GPS used CGPSS results to advocate for the increases to Tri-Agency fellowships (SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC) for graduate students implemented by the federal government in 2024. The to Parliament recommending the increases cited the º«¹úÂãÎè CGPSS results.ÌýÂ
- Initiatives to support graduate student career preparedness:Â
- Creation of the College of Graduate Mentorship designed to help upper-year doctoral students and postdocs to prepare for the academic job market
- TRaCE Talk career panels open to all graduate students and postdocs
- Funding for for doctoral students who have won FRQ awards
- Increased funding for graduate internships, including the Doctoral Internship Program

Why should I participate?
CGPSS is a simple and secure way for you to communicate your feedback on your graduate program to GPS and to inspire change in graduate education here at º«¹úÂãÎè and across the country. The more graduate students participate in the survey, the more effective the results will be for advocating for improvements.
Confidentiality
Participation in CGPSS is voluntary, and responses are completely confidential. No individual will ever be identified.
