For alumnus, seaweed is green gold
Jean-Paul Deveau sells seaweed — or rather, products derived from it. His company, Acadian Seaplants Limited, is the world’s biggest producer of seaweed-based fertilizers and products for human and animal consumption. The company manufactures in five locations, including New Brunswick, Maine and Ireland; and exports to over 80 countries. One of those countries is Japan, where Deveau’s products are ubiquitous.

Quebec’s finance minister meets with community to talk budget
Quebec’s finance minister, Carlos Leitão, is touring the province’s universities to consult students and other university members ahead of the provincial budget. The agenda is heavy on fiscal policy, public infrastructure investment, regional development and the social safety net. So far, Mr. Leitão has been to the University of Sherbrooke, Laval University and Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

MBA Students awarded second place in the Business for a Better World case competition
Congratulations to MBA students, Aman Arora, Timothy Lane, Santiago Monroy, and Jose Nunez Gutierrez, who were awarded second place in the Business for a Better World case competition. The team has been working since October on designing a global equity portfolio that advances the UN’s sustainable development goals, which culminated with a presentation in Davos, Switzerland on January 19th to a panel of high-profile judges.

Business schools heed the call for more data-literate graduates
Deloitte Analytics and other companies have been pushing Canadian universities for years to produce more data-literate graduates to fill their talent needs. Their efforts appear to be paying off, with business schools ramping up their offerings in data analytics.
In the Desautels MBA with a concentration in analytics, students take a five-course concentration that involves three sides: descriptive, predictive and a prescriptive.

Mark Michaud Commended by the Quebec Government
Mark Michaud, MBA'14, Director of Administration, recently received a commendation letter from the Ministry of Education’s Director General of University Affairs, Jean-François Lehoux, thanking him for his outstanding contribution to the workgroup that spent over a year reviewing the academic classification system used by the Quebec Government.
Heike Birlenbach appointed Vice President Sales Lufthansa Group for the EMEA sales region
Since 2014 Mrs. Heike Birlenbach holds the position of Vice President Sales Europe Lufthansa Group Airlines. As of next year, 2017, she will assume the role of Vice President Sales EMEA Lufthansa Group Airlines. In this position Birlenbach will not only be responsible for all sales and commercial activities in Europe but also in the Middle East and Africa.
SunExpress appoints Jens Bischof as new managing director
Jens Bischof has been appointed as managing director of SunExpress, a Deutsche Lufthansa/Turkish Airlines joint venture, with effect from January 1, 2017.
He holds a degree of business administration (Dipl. Betriebswirt) from the University of Applied Sciences (AKAD) in Rendsburg and a master’s degree in Management from in Montreal, Canada.

Chohan, a graduate of Desautels MBA in Strategy and Leadership (2014) delivered the 2015 Foreign Affairs Lecture in the Global Leadership Program (GLP) at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.
