While ensembles at Schulich frequently put on class concerts throughout the school year, it’s much less common for them to collaborate with another of the school’s groups – let alone two. On Thursday, April 6, the Baroque Orchestra, Cappella Antica and the Schulich Singers will come together to perform Handel’s legendary oratorio Israel in Egypt under the joint leadership of directors Valerie Kinslow, Jean-Sébastien Vallée and Hank Knox.

Schulich composition professor Denys Bouliane was the featured artist on March 20th in a Radio-France program devoted to his work. The with animator Bruno Letort can be heard in its entirety and features large excerpts of his seminal works. For Bouliane, teaching composition is like the act of composing itself: you can have manifold interests and an open mind, but ultimately you cannot offer more than who you are.

On March 11, 2017, Schulich doctoral piano student Zhenni Li, a student of Prof. Stéphane Lemelin,was named winner of the New York Concert Artists and Associates Worldwide Debut Audition. Selected as one of three finalists, out of 165 who applied, Zhenni Li performed the Rachmaninov 3rd Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 30 with theNew York Concert Artists Symphony Orchestra, led by conductorEduard Zilberkant. Preliminary auctions were held in Los Angeles, New York, Cologne, Warsaw, Budapest and Paris.

It speaks volumes that Prof. Brian Cherney’s Canadian Music Concert series grew out of a desire to share our nation’s great works with his students. While teaching his course on Canadian Music at Schulich, he came up with an idea to make the compositions in the curriculum more accessible to the class — and this has since become a well-loved yearly tradition.

Le voilà, le concert, qui m’a «purgé» de l’état d’hébétude dans lequel m’avait entraîné le récital d’András Schiff, vendredi dernier. C’est dire qu’il a surpassé de très loin le récital de la veille, du réputé Yefim Bronfman.

In the final round, which took place on Tuesday, February 21,Antoine gave a stunning performance of Canadian Composer R. Murray Schafer's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. He will performwith the Symphony Orchestra during their 2017-18 season.

TheConcours d'Art lyrique de la Relève Musicale was held on February 17, 18 and 19 in Québec City. Three current students were awarded prizes: tenorJeremy Scinocca, BMus'19 received 1st Prize, tenor Graeme Linton, B.Mus'19 and bass-baritone Reed Copeland, BMus'17 each received 3rd Prize. In addition baritoneIgor Mostovoi, MMus'17 was engaged by the Opéra national du Rhin, Strasbourg, France for their Young Artists Program for the 2017-2018 season.

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera ,the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss’sDie Fledermausin the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lefèvre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier.

Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor Andris Nelsons.
