Danielle Smith is running for the leadership of Alberta鈥檚 United Conservative Party, and could become Alberta鈥檚 next premier. But Smith is campaigning on a platform that includes internet conspiracy theories. In a newsletter, she cautioned that Canada鈥檚 currency could be replaced with an international common digital currency, and the federal government could use it to 鈥減unish and reward鈥 Canadians. But that鈥檚 not very likely, according to Mo Chaudhury, an Assistant Professor of Finance at Desautels.

In truth, that answer looks different around the world, in both formal and informal economies, depending on how the local, state, and national economies function and on how the culture views business ownership.

Unionization is having a moment. Employees at Amazon, Starbucks and Apple have all held successful union drives. But forming a union and negotiating a contract are not the same thing. In a 2008 study, Desautels Prof. John-Paul Ferguson found that union election victories resulted in first contracts only 56.3 per cent of the time. 鈥淚t鈥檚 even harder now,鈥 says Ferguson.

GM plans to eliminate all tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles by 2035 鈥 but right now, we don鈥檛 have the electrical grid we need to power all the electric vehicles (EVs) that we would need to replace the existing petroleum-powered ones.
