Professor Andrea Bjorkland, the L. Yves Fortier Chair in International Arbitration and International Commercial Law, was delighted to receive more than 80 submissions from scholars and junior practitioners affiliated with more than 50 institutions for the 2014 Nappert Prize in International Arbitration. Authors hailed from around the world, with every continent save Antarctica represented.

It is with sadness that the Faculty announces the death of Professor William Tetley, C.M., Q.C., LL.L., who passed away, surrounded by his family, on July 1, 2014.

A world-renowned expert in maritime law, Professor Tetley led an extremely full life.

The Faculty is pleased to announce the appointment of Lionel Smith (first picture) to the Sir William Macdonald Chair. Established in 1895, the Macdonald Chair is one of the oldest endowed positions at . In addition, Professor Smith was also selected for a Killam Research Fellowship in March 2014 in recognition of his outstanding research on fiduciary obligations and conflicts of interest.

He was a mentor and inspiration to generations of students and law professors, and a transformative force at the Faculty of Law, the University, in Canadian society, and in the broader world.

Old Chancellor Day Hall, the Faculty of Law’s most iconic building, is closing at the end of June for 16 months as we undertake much-needed renovations to upgrade the building’s heating, electrical systems, plumbing, windows and more, while respecting its historical features.

Faculty and staff who were in OCDH have been relocated either to New Chancellor Day Hall and 3674-3690 Peel Street, or to rented office space near ’s Roddick Gates at 2001 College Avenue, suite 750.

Third year Law student Ngozi Okidegbe has been selected to present her paper, "Litigating HIV-related discrimination in Nigeria: implications of Georgina Ahamefule v. Imperial Medical Centre and Dr. Molokwu," – written under the supervision of Professor Vrinda Narain – at the 20th International AIDS Conference, which will take place July 20-25, 2014, in Melbourne, Australia.

On June 4, Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Mr. Justice Clément Gascon (BCL’81) to the nation’s highest court, replacing Mr. Justice Morris Fish (BCL’62), who retired last August after a decade on the Supreme Court.

On May 28, Roderick Macdonald was awarded in absentia the Medal for Exceptional Academic Achievement, one of the University’s highest honours. Macdonald received the Medal as part of the Convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Law, where he taught thousands of students over the course of a distinguished career that spanned more than three decades. Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, accepted the Medal in Professor Macdonald’s name.

The BCL/LLB graduating class is setting out to change the face of the Faculty, with a crowdfunded class gift aimed at expanding the Faculty’s photo collection.

“Students today are pursuing a hugely diverse range of careers after exiting the gates,” the project page explains. “We believe they present a wonderful opportunity to broaden this collection and to allow the enormously varied careers of our alums to shine.”

Laval University’s Faculty of Law has awarded a Justitia Prize to Professor Pierre-Gabriel Jobin, Ad.E. He received the Prize during the annual Quebec graduates’ cocktail, which was organized by the Dean of that Faculty, Professor Eugénie Brouillet, on May 15, 2014.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (Canada) to , ten students from ’s Faculty of Law and ten students in Shantou University’s Law School (Guangdong Province, China), will be doing a summer law program together from May 19 to 30. The program, which alternates between Montreal and Shantou, will take place in China this year.
