Deferring your offer

Undergraduate Deferrals of Admission

This information is intended for newly admitted undergraduate students, excluding those admitted to Bachelor of Music programs.ÌýStudents admitted to B.Mus. programs are required to contact the Schulich School of Music directly.

Deadlines

  • Students newly-admitted forÌýthe September term must submit their deferral requests by August 31.
  • Students newly-admitted forÌýthe January term must submit their deferral requests by December 31.

Before requesting a deferral please take note of the following stipulations and/or conditions:

1. Applicants must first have accepted their offer of admission in order to be able to request a deferral. NOTE: the acceptance deposit is non-refundable. Students who chose not to attend º«¹úÂãÎè after having deferred will forfeit their deposit.

2. Participation in post-secondary study at another college or university is prohibited .

3. Applicants must deregister from any and all º«¹úÂãÎè courses in order for their deferral to be finalized.

4. Making a request does not guarantee a deferral will be granted. Only after an application has been received and reviewed can a determination be made. Deferrals can only be fully granted and finalized once º«¹úÂãÎè has received final pre-university results and/or a final graduation transcript.

5. Students who are not granted a deferral may either begin their program in their entry term or reapply to º«¹úÂãÎè for the following year. The latter does not guarantee admission to a program.

6. º«¹úÂãÎè may refuse a request or revoke a deferral for academic cause, such as a dramatic decline in grades during the final portion of the pre-university program, or a lack of graduation, or for enrolling in unapproved undergraduate-level courses during the gap year.


How to request a deferral

1. Go to your

2. Accept your offer of admission and pay your confirmation deposit.

3. Once you have completed 'Step 2', a button will appear in the 'Additional options' section of your portal.Ìý

4. Select 'Defer your application'


Additional Considerations

Scholarships

Entrance scholarships are normally carried over with a deferral, but you will need to reapply for any bursaries you may have been granted. Further information can be found here: Entrance scholarships for future undergraduates - º«¹úÂãÎè

Housing

If you have requested a space in residence, it is essential that you contact Residences and Student Housing regarding the cancellation of your reservation for the deferred year. They can also be reached at housing.residences [at] mcgill.ca.
