Program Requirements
The School of Social Work at º«¹úÂãÎè prepares graduates for careers and leadership in the fields of social work and social welfare. In the M.S.W. program, students develop an understanding of a broad range of theories which inform practice, policy, and research. Envisioned as an opportunity to advance knowledge and skills, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in an area of scholarship and practice related to "Children and Families", "Social Care and Health Studies", and "Community and International Development". In addition, students investigate a subject matter of their choice in one of these broad areas of study through an independent study project or a master's thesis. Through the M.S.W. program, students develop critical and innovative approaches to practice competence and to policy analysis such that they may contribute to both established social services and to new and less developed areas of service provision.Research Project (9 credits)

SWRK 690 Independent Study Project (9 credits)
Overview
Social Work : An independent study project on a topic of interest in a comprehensive and creative fashion. The project is completed by the student following initial guidance from her/his advisor. It systematically examines a theoretical, substantive or empirical matter, using appropriate methodology.

Overview
Social Work : Quantitative methods used in social work, including data collection and analysis, critical appraisal of existing research, and proposal writing. Descriptive and explanatory designs, covering quantitative methods used in experimental studies, surveys, and in analyzing administrative data.

NOTE:
While not a prerequisite for admission, possession of a working knowledge of the French language is important not only to candidates who intend to seek admission to the Quebec professional Ordre after graduation but also to those who wish to maximize their field placement opportunities during their program. In consultation with the Field Education Coordinator, students may have the option of completing their field requirements at an approved social service agency outside of Quebec.
Elective Courses (18 credits)
18 credits of 500 or 600 level courses; up to 6 credits in total may be taken outside the Department.
Students in both M.S.W. options are invited to take up to two courses in other departments of the University in areas of study not offered in the School of Social Work. Students also have the option of taking equivalent research methodology courses offered in other departments to fulfil the research requirement. All students must secure the approval of their adviser prior to registration for such courses.
