Expert: Quebec teens’ attitudes to cell phone use in schools
Most of the 500 Quebec teens surveyed recently are opposed to the use of cell phones in schools. The research was conducted as part of the first phase of work by a examining the impact of screens and social media on the health and development of youth.
The second phase of the commission’s work, to be launched Thursday, Jan. 30, will involve consultations and public hearings to examine such issues as access to social media; measures used by schools to control screen time and access to the web; use of video games; and cyberbullying.

Adam Dubé, Associate Professor, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, Director, Technology, Learning, & Cognition Lab, has expertise in the use of educational apps, iPads for learning, and educational video games. He has strong opinions on screen use and bans on screen time.

Sara Grimes is a full professor in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies and has expertise in a range of issues related to the use of video games by children and youth. This includes the impact of games on their learning, well-being, and social development. She can also speak about age-based restrictions and the regulation of games.
