Abstract:ÌýDr. Dymecki will present progress in delineating the developmental specialization of subtypes of serotonin producing neurons in the mammalian brain and their network architecture, circuitry modulation, and selective roles in controlling behavior and physiology ranging from respiration and thermal balance to coping behaviors to adapting activity and sleep patterns to changes in photoperiod. Emerging is a neuronal structure-function map of substantial heterogeneity that suggests new ways to conceptualize and design treatments for serotonin-related disorders, such as affective disorders, respiratory depression, and the sudden infant death syndrome.
