mathstats grad student seminar

This week,ÌýJames McVittie will be telling us about the life and times of stats:
Ìý
Statistics is a subject which relates observed data to precise mathematical models. How can such a simply stated goal be so difficult? In this talk, we will discuss the work and motivation of various mathematicians who developed the tools used in everyday statistics. We will examine historical questions such as "Why was the development of least squares so fundamental to statistics?" and "Why did the conditional probability formula create such divide among statisticians?". We will then present the major areas and problems that are now the main focus of statistical researchers and then briefly comment on the different directions statistics may take in the future.Ìý

See you all there!Ìý

All graduate students are invited. As with all talks in the graduate student seminar, this talk will be accessible to all graduate students in math and stats.ÌýThis seminar was made possible by funding from the º«¹úÂãÎè mathematics and statistics departmentand GSAMS.
