LB Building, Concordia University, 1400 Blvd. De Maisonneuve Ouest, Montreal, Quebec, CA
My Neighbour

Join MORSL in visiting a local Shia Muslim community, Masjid Ahlillbait Mosque. Shia Islam is the second-largest branch of Islam. We will join them for a special discussion event to mark World Hijab Day, “Unveiling the Truth about the hijabi experience in the Western world.”  Come learn from the insider perspectives of Muslim women concerning this topic. We'll also enjoy a dinner with chicken, rice, and potatoes with the community!

We will meet at Concordia's campus at the LB Library Building at 5:30 PM and will travel together by the metro to Plamondon station, where the mosque is located. The discussion event will start at 6:30 PM.

Event Agenda:

5:30 pm: Meet at the LB atrium (Concordia campus), 1400 de Maisonneuve West, main floor

5:45 pm: travel by STM to the mosque, 4075 Av. de Courtrai, Montréal (make sure you have a pass, ticket or fare for the bus)

6:30-8:30 pm: gathering, dinner and discussion with Ahlillbait youth community

Approx 8:30 pm: departure on your own

Dress Code:

Dress should be business casual (no jeans with holes or very casual clothing). Both men and women are expected to have their shoulders, torsos and legs covered. Women may choose to cover their heads or not; please bring a scarf or other covering if you want to have this option.  You will be asked to remove your shoes or boots at the entrance to the mosque, but can keep your socks on.

Gender:

Men and women pray separately at Masjid Ahlillbait and will sit separately in the workshop.  The community has told us that they generally avoid physically contact between people of different genders; a respectful greeting would include warm words and a smile, but no handshakes or other physical contact.  If you have concerns about navigating the space, please contact MfSC to discuss arrangements.

Food:

Our hosts are generously providing dinner, and have told us they plan to serve chicken (halal), potatoes and rice.  Please email morsl [at] mcgill.ca if you have dietary restrictions, but please note that they may not be able to accommodate all needs.  You can participate in the event without partaking in the shared food.
