Workshops
Participants will be able to choose two workshops out of the following four options:
Workshop 1: Primer in Ethics: navigating ethics in practice-based research and quality improvement with Kathleen Rice, PhD., and Madison Leggatt, MSc.
This workshop will provide an overview of navigating the ethical approval process for research and quality improvement projects. Researchers and clinicians will work through an activity that highlights key differences between research and quality improvement, including project aims, interventions, risks, and knowledge dissemination. Special emphasis will be placed on obtaining ethics approval for participatory research. By the end of the session, attendees will understand the steps required to obtain ethics approval for their own projects.
Workshop 2: Harmony in Research: roles and responsibilities with Machelle Wilchesky, PhD., and Roland Grad, MD.
This workshop will outline the various roles within a research team, including principal investigators, co-investigators, research coordinators, data analysts, and other essential contributors. It will highlight the the importance and concepts of each different role: leadership hierarchy, project ownership, expectations, and workload distribution. It will aslo explore how to navigate potential conflicts and disagreements through constructive and respectful approaches.
Workshop 3: Turning clinical questions into scholarly inquiry with Jeannie Haggerty. PhD., and Karin Fink. MD, PhD.
This workshop will allow both clinicians and researchers to collaborate in formulating scholarly inquiries that address burning questions that emerge from clinical practices. Scholarly inquiry may pertain to new knowledge needed for clinical practice or for improving the care process. The PICO method of framing inquiries is used by both clinicians and researchers to provide direction for how to address the scholarly inquiry.
Workshop 4: QI-101: Essentials of Continuous Quality Improvement with Isabelle Gaboury, PhD.
Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is one of the ten pillars of the Patient鈥檚 Medical Home but often remains an abstract concept. Through this interactive session, you will be introduced to the basic concepts of CQI and will practice them throughout the presentation. Using concrete examples from family medicine, we will provide an overview of the various steps in the CQI process and present different tools for use. By the end of this session, you will be equipped to be key players in identifying and prioritizing improvement opportunities in your practice setting and in carrying out the CQI process.
