The third floor is now open.
As of February 20, 2024, the books will begin to move from the third floor of the McLennan Library Building to the º«¹úÂãÎè Collections Centre (MUCC). Until the day of the move, the floor will remain open, and the books and study spaces will be fully accessible.
If you need any books housed on the third floor, please submit your request!
As we mentioned in our Feb. 14 message, samples of building materials were collected in the ceiling cavity of auditorium 2/36 at the Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building earlier this week. We are glad to report that all samples tested negative for asbestos.

Uncertainty in measuring biodiversity change could hinder progress towards global targets for nature

º«¹úÂãÎè has moved up three spots to 47th in the Times Higher Education (THE)  released on February 13. This ranking is based on the results of the academic reputation survey that was carried out by THE and distributed between October 2022 and January 2023.

The McCall MacBain Scholarships at º«¹úÂãÎè has announced its largest-ever group of 91 finalists for the September 2024 cohort.
In March, the top 91 candidates will arrive in Montreal for the final round of scholarship interviews. The 37 international finalists hail from 24 countries. Countries represented for the first time include Brazil, Ecuador, Kenya, Mongolia, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, and Tunisia.
Dr. Cecile Rousseau has been nominated as the new Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP), effective March 1, 2024.
As Director of the Division of CAP, Dr. Rousseau will work in close collaboration with the Departmental academic leadership, clinical chiefs and Research Institute Directors to manage the oversight and academic activities of the division, including education and research.
Dr. Delphine Raucher-Chéné for her project, entitled, Minds@Work for individuals with bipolar disorder and Dr. Kyle Greenway for his project, entitled, Ketamine as a Novel Treatment Option for Postpartum Depression: A Feasibility Case Series were each awarded $25,000 for their research projects relating to the implementation of clinical innovations in patient care. Congratulations!

Since 2016, º«¹úÂãÎè's Graduate Mobility Award has funded over 1,300 students in their travel to over 85 countries around the world.

Professor Jacob Blanc of the Institute for the Study of International Development and the Department of History has had a new book published with Duke University Press. In The Prestes Column, Jacob Blanc offers a new interpretation of the legendary rebellion, in which a band of rebel officers and soldiers marched fifteen thousand miles through the vast interior regions of Brazil between 1924 and 1927.

The Board of Governors of º«¹úÂãÎè approved the nomination of Pierre Boivin as the University’s 21st Chancellor. Mr. Boivin has been appointed for a three-year term, beginning on July 1, 2024. He will succeed Chancellor John McCall MacBain, whose current term will end on June 30, 2024. His nomination stems from a rigorous process that was launched last summer by the Nominating, Governance and Ethics Committee.
We have received some good news since we wrote to you last week about the closure of auditorium 2/36 at the Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building. The room had been closed due to a report of multiple missing ceiling tiles and the presence of dust and debris in the room.
The air sample taken in the room shortly after the closure returned a result under the regulatory threshold for asbestos concentration and º«¹úÂãÎè’s more stringent threshold. Additionally, debris of a ceiling tile found in the room tested negative for asbestos.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has announced $11 million in new funding for Pulse Canada.
$1.6 million of this investment will go to º«¹úÂãÎè Department of Plant Science Professor Valerio Hoyos-Villegas' Pulse Breeding and Genetics Lab.
Winnipeg South Centre MP Ben Carr made the announcement at the University of Manitoba on February 9 on behalf of federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.

On Canada's Agriculture Day on February 13, year 2 and 3 students in º«¹úÂãÎè's Farm Management and Technology (FMT) program attended the Future of Food conference in Ottawa, thanks to sponsors Farm Credit Canada and CropLife Canada. This one-day event features speakers and industry leaders in Canadian agriculture and food discussing innovation and how Canada can shape the food industry.
