Over the past three decades, the º«¹úÂãÎè Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship has catalyzed the creation of 450 active startups that have generated more than 6,000 new jobs. Now, the º«¹úÂãÎè Dobson Centre is celebrating another milestone: $1 billion in seed funding raised by the startups it has supported. Since the late John Dobson (BCom’49) funded its creation in 1988, the Centre named in honour of his vision has served as launchpad for entrepreneurs from all 11 faculties at º«¹úÂãÎè.

Sandra Gualtieri, an entrepreneur and disability rights activist with cerebral palsy, enlisted the help of four º«¹úÂãÎè students to design a custom airplane seat that alleviates discomfort for people living with disabilities.

Constructed out of memory foam that is designed to rest on top of a traditional airplane seat, the Universal Seating Apparatus prototype won first place in the Social Impact Enterprise track of the 2021 º«¹úÂãÎè Dobson Cup Startup competition.

The º«¹úÂãÎè Executive Institute’s four-week Strategic Problem Solving course has made a recent top 10 list of executive courses in strategy or strategic management. The online course teaches executives, engineers, and entrepreneurs to use the popular 4S method used by management consultants to devise and sell solutions with confidence.

Congratulations to Desautels MBA students Beatriz Otero Russo Villaca,ÌýChristopher Bahen-Taitand and Melissa Palumbo for placing third at the Wharton’s People Analytics Case Competition. The team virtually showcased their findings to a panel of judges including representatives from Teach for America, academics and industry experts. They earned a cash prize and complimentary tickets to the 2021 virtual and 2022 in-person Wharton People Analytics Conferences.

The Management Undergraduate Society (MUS) has awarded the 2020-2021 Professor of the Year Award to Professor Jean-Nicolas Reyt. This annual award recognizes a professor's meaningful involvement with the student body, eagerness to have an impact on students lives outside the classroom, and great insight on theoretical and academic matters. He can’t speak for everyone, but Professor Karl Moore has enjoyed the advantages of teaching on Zoom during the pandemic. While he admits there are drawbacks, Zoom gives him an opportunity to welcome global guests to the classroom, which would be impossible in-person. Moore also finds that students are more receptive to participating through Zoom, as the virtual dynamic levels the playing field.

The Quebec Ministry of Economy and Innovation has awarded the Bensadoun School of Retail Management with $5 million in funding over the next four years. According to Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon, a significant portion of the funds will support the Bensadoun School’s retail innovation lab. Unveiled earlier this year, the live laboratory store is designed to provide insights that will help accelerate Quebec retailers along the path of digital transformation.
