If a company doesn’t want to share salary information, there could be a reason for that. About 75 per cent of people don’t negotiate a higher salary for themselves, and women and minorities are underrepresented among those who do not, according to Prof. Jean-Nicolas Reyt. But Montreal-based telecommunications company Oxio is taking steps toward salary transparency.

You might not know Shein’s brand, but chances are you’ve seen their clothing. The Chinese fast fashion company has quickly and quietly grown into an e-commerce giant. Shein targets young shoppers with an online-only business model and rock-bottom prices. They have been able to scale quickly because without physical shopfronts, Shein can sell anywhere that it can ship their products. But companies shouldn’t try to compete with Shein on price, according to Charles de Brabant, the Executive Director of the Bensadoun School of Retail Management.

Bombardier is all in on business jets, and that seems to be a good thing. The Montreal-headquartered aerospace company sold off its commercial aviation business to focus on building the business jets that serve the travel needs of the ultra-wealthy, and the pandemic has given that choice a boost. Demand for private jets soared as COVID-19 restrictions were enacted, and it has not yet come back to earth. For every business jet that Bombardier ships, it’s receiving 2.5 new orders. While some might long for the days that the company was manufacturing commercial aircraft, Prof.

Bread and grain waste is a leading cause of food waste in Canada, and but this can be reduced by transforming spent brewing yeast and stale bread into flour that can be sold to businesses or directly to the consumers. It's just one of the pressing problems that Desautels undergraduate students are addressing through the Integrated Management Student Fellowships (IMSF) program, a two-semester, six credit experiential leadership development initiative that is designed to help BCom students prepare for impactful and fulfilling careers.

The pandemic demanded a rapid response from health care systems around the world. This revealed both strengths and weaknesses–and now there is an opportunity to examine the experience for lessons about the future. The International Masters for Health Leadership is doing exactly that. Groups of students studied a health care system and the unique challenges that it faces, which ranged from a dearth of e-health records to a culture of vaccine hesitancy.

The pandemic hit brick and mortar retailers hard. Lockdowns pushed consumers toward e-commerce websites. ALDO was forced to close more than 250 stores, but it rapidly pivoted its business model to accommodate changing retail trends, says ALDO CEO David Bensadoun, who spoke to undergraduate and graduate students from Professor Marie Josée Lamothe's classes at the Bensadoun School of Retail Management.

Math is abstract, and it can be complicated, but it is also central to our everyday lives. Without math, it is impossible to operate a cell phone, a satellite, or a subway network. And as a math tutor, Noberta Faustin seeks to demonstrate that centrality to students. A Desautels EMBA student and the Senior Director of Market Risk at PSP Investments, Faustin is a finalist for the Prix Étoile Montante by the Association de femmes en finance au Quebec (AFFQ).

Analytics can tell a story–but they don’t tell the whole story. In any organization, managers need to have an awareness of personalities and politics, and that can affect the decisions they make, writes David Creelman in Talent Management and HR. Creelman’s conclusions are partly based on a study of accountants carried out by Desautels Prof. Henry Mintzberg several decades ago. Mintzberg found that managers didn’t use accounting information the way that the accountants thought they should.

The skyscrapers of Toronto’s financial district house Canada’s largest banks, and some of its most successful companies. The buildings themselves are largely owned by Canada’s largest pension funds, which have directly developed real estate across major Canadian cities. This approach has generated high returns for the funds over the past two decades, but it has also allowed the pension funds to be leaders in the implementation of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Acting like an extrovert is exhausting for introverted people–and vice-versa. Prof. Karl Moore encourages everyone to take mental breaks during the day to recharge. An introvert with a meeting-heavy schedule that demands a lot of interpersonal interaction might need to schedule a solo walk, while an extrovert who is working from home might need to take time to get outside and talk to their neighbours.
