The º«¹úÂãÎè Alumni Association (MAA) celebrated some of its most dedicated alumni and volunteers at its annual Honours and Awards Banquet tonight. Student leaders, graduates who have had a significant impact on alumni life and the community, and volunteers with outstanding records of service to º«¹úÂãÎè were honoured at a banquet held at the Omni Mont-Royal Hotel in Montreal.
With Mr. Buffett's annual celebration last weekend and some grumbling about his failure to beat the market in four of the last five years, people keep reminding me of a piece I wrote in 1996 for Dow Jones about Buffett's portfolio.?

After nine years at the helm, Dr. Peter Todd (BCom¡¯83) has stepped down as Dean of º«¹úÂãÎ衯s Desautels Faculty of Management on April 30, 2014.
¡°My time as Dean has been a great learning experience for me and has been personally rewarding, particularly so from the opportunity to work with, and learn from, so many talented members of the Desautels and º«¹úÂãÎè community,¡± he said. ¡°I leave this role proud of what we have accomplished and satisfied that we have, together, strengthened a foundation on which to develop the Faculty into the future.¡±
Honorees include particle physicist who co-led the discovery of the Higgs boson,?Room to Read founder and agronomist who created ¡°super rice¡±
¡°And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country,¡± is the saying now famously associated with John F. Kennedy, though Oliver Wendell Holmes said it eight decades before.
This same statement is the precise recipe for the survival and success of family businesses too, though as far as I know, nobody put it quite this way: ¡°And, so, my dear relatives, ask not what the business can do you for you; ask what you can do for the business.¡±

He is currently on an MBA exchange in Beijing, at a joint program between Tsinghua School of Economics (SEM) and MIT. Professors Ruthanne Huising and Phil Levy have been selected as recipients of the 2013-14 Desautels Faculty Teaching Awards for Undergraduate and Graduate teaching respectively. ?
The selections were made by a group chaired by Professor Yalovsky and included student representatives of the BCom and MBA programs who brought forward nominations from their peers. The awards will be presented at the May 30th?convocation ceremony.

Lili has a long record of service as a volunteer for the MAA and the Faculty of Management, and she most recently served as Vice-Chair of the º«¹úÂãÎè Board of Governors. In addition to her º«¹úÂãÎè involvement she has sat on the boards of Centraide, the OSM, Y des Femmes, and the Montreal Circus School.
