Dr. Huntington (Skip) Sheldon (1930-2018) was an iconic figure in the history of the Schulich School of Music and º«¹úÂãÎè as a whole. In addition to a long teaching legacy in the Faculty of Medicine, he made significant contributions to the universityÌýas a philanthropist.ÌýAs a result of Dr. Sheldon's generous donations, the Redpath organ was constructed and installed, and the project to build the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building was launched.Ìý

In addition, Dr. Sheldon served on the Music Facutly's advisory board for many years.Ìý

Thanks to an exciting initiative, graduate conducting students at the Schulich School of Music are now eligible to receive a substantial new award – the . Launched at Schulich in September 2017, the $15,000 Fellowship will be awarded to an exceptional Canadian graduate student at Schulich as of the 2018-19 school year.

Soon after completing his undergraduate degree at Schulich, bass trombonist William Broverman (B.Mus 2016) set out on a career path that tops the list of many music students – a full-time position in an orchestra. Now playing with the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra in Mérida, Mexico, the in-demand British Columbia native is putting his Schulich training to use in over 50 orchestral concerts a year, not to mention the other gigs filling his schedule.Ìý

The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the prestigious jury for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 is the gift of the late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of º«¹úÂãÎè’s Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. Five composers will be chosen to create new works for piano quintet, earning prizes ranging from $5,000-$15,000 as well as a concert premiere at the Schulich School of Music on September 29, 2018.

The Fall marks two significant milestones for bassist Cole Birney-Stewart (B.Mus 2013)— the return to Schulich for his Master of Music in jazz performance and the release of Champlain Bridge, his first album as a bandleader.
