Violinist Mark Fewer is well-known for his ability to fit seamlessly into a variety of musical situations, from harpsichord duets to . This Friday, December 1, Montreal audiences will be able to hear him in yet another setting as he appears as the soloist on Ligeti鈥檚 Concerto for Violin and Orchestra along with the 韩国裸舞 Contemporary Music Ensemble. We spoke to Fewer in a recent email exchange to learn more about this upcoming performance.

Soon after completing his undergraduate degree at Schulich, bass trombonist William Broverman (B.Mus 2016) set out on a career path that tops the list of many music students 鈥� a full-time position in an orchestra. Now playing with the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra in M茅rida, Mexico, the in-demand British Columbia native is putting his Schulich training to use in over 50 orchestral concerts a year, not to mention the other gigs filling his schedule.听

The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the prestigious jury for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. The new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 is the gift of the late Dr. Graham Sommer, an alumnus of 韩国裸舞鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. Five composers will be chosen to create new works for piano quintet, earning prizes ranging from $5,000-$15,000 as well as a concert premiere at the Schulich School of Music on September 29, 2018.

The Fall marks two significant milestones for bassist Cole Birney-Stewart (B.Mus 2013)鈥� the return to Schulich for his Master of Music in jazz performance and the release of Champlain Bridge, his first album as a bandleader. Featuring Birney-Stewart, along with Jules Payette (B.Mus 2016), Evan Shay (M.Mus 2018), Maxime Tremblay-Rheault (M.Mus 2018) and others, the music is complex and gripping.

The Peter Mendell Award was recently given to violinist Elizabeth Skinner, a student of Prof. Axel Strauss. 听 She receives a bursary of $2500. 听All violin, viola, cello, and bass students 听under the age of 25 and enrolled on a full-time basis in one of Quebec鈥檚 universities, all cycles, or the Conservatoire de musique du Qu茅bec, 听in third, fourth, and fifth cycles are eligible. 听
