WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. - The Williams College Ephs exploded for a pair of goals in the final five minutes to snap a 2-2 deadlock and came away with a 4-2 scrimmage victory over the visiting º«¹úÂãÎè women's soccer team at Cole Field in Williamstown, Mass, Saturday.
It was the second scrimmage loss of the season for the Martlets, who were previously beaten 4-0 by Yale on Aug. 26.
In men's exhibition play, Williams dumped the Redmen 5-1.
The women's game featured two penalty shots - one resulting in a nice save by º«¹úÂãÎè 'keeper Shimone Slomowitz - the other culminating in a goal by Martlets midfielder Anna Smith which evened the score at 2-2 in the 60th minute.
Slomowitz, a sophomore from West Vancouver, made five saves in a losing cause.
The Ephs opening the scoring in the 15th minute but º«¹úÂãÎè notched the equalizer just five minutes later when freshman Alexandra Armstrong connected.
Williams took a 2-1 lead some five minutes into the second half but Smith connected on her penalty at the 60-minute mark, which set the stage for the final flurry.
"We did not play a well-organized game, especially in the first half. We failed to settle down in the defensive zone, where we were stretched too far apart," said º«¹úÂãÎè head coach Marc Mounicot, who was not overly pleased with the officiating, especially on an apparent hand ball which was not called and resulted in the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute. "However, we showed some character coming back twice to even the score."
The Martlets, who posted a 3-2-1 preseason record, including a 3-0-1 mark against CIS teams begin regular-season play against the Montreal Carabins on Sept. 10 at Molson Stadium.
