Redbirds rookie Arndt dazzles over debut weekend

COTE ST. LUC, Que. - Sophomore David Haberman of Teaneck, N.J., tossed a three-hitter and rookie third-baseman Chan Arndt of Yarmouth, Maine, hit a second inning solo home run as the º«¹úÂãÎè Redbirds held on for a 2-1 upset over Concordia in university baseball at Trudeau Park in Cote St. Luc, Que., Sunday.

The win, combined with a 5-4 victory over John Abbott College earlier in the day, improved º«¹úÂãÎè's record to 2-1 in the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association. On Saturday, the Redbirds dropped their season opener 11-0 to Concordia considered by many a preseason favourite to win the pennant.

Haberman pitched a rare complete game, allowing no earned runs, while striking out seven and walking five.

Arndt, who was batting sixth in the lineup, went 3-for-7 at the plate in the twi-night affair. He scored two runs and knocked in three others to go along with a double, homerun and stolen base. Not a bad performance for a rookie who debuted on Saturday with an 0-for-3 performance in the loss to Concordia.
The Rebirds (2-1) return to action on Sept. 13 with a doubleheader
in Ottawa against the Gee-Gees.
