From men’s hockey gold to women’s moguls silver, athletes, coaches shone

It was a magical Olympic Winter Games for Canada and is proud to be part of the formula for success. From alumnus Mike Babcock’s coaching of the gold-medal winning men’s hockey team to Management student Jennifer Heil’s silver medal in freestyle moguls skiing, the University says congratulations and well done to all the ians who contributed to Canada’s amazing performance at the Vancouver games.

Chancellor Emeritus Richard W. Pound, a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee and the former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, presented medals in a number of events, including women’s hockey.

“This is simply outstanding,” said Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum. “Our athletes, our coaches, our alumni made an important contribution to the Olympic success story and we are very, very proud of their efforts. These Games have been a wonderful moment for Canada; they have been a showcase for our determination, our courage, our dedication to achieving all we can achieve as individuals, and as teams.

“Our members of the Canadian women’s hockey team, Catherine Ward, Charline Labonté and Kim St-Pierre, who won another gold medal, set a standard of excellence that has been rarely met. And no one should forget of course, Peter Smith, head coach of our amazing Martlets hockey team and assistant coach of the Canadian team. Our hearts have truly been glowing as we have watched others from , including speed skater Tyson Heung (BEd’05), who skated for Germany.

“On behalf of the entire community, I wish to offer our most sincere congratulations to all Canadian athletes, coaches and support staff who have made these Games such an incredible event for the entire country,” Prof. Munroe-Blum said. “And I was so pleased to see Mr. Babcock wearing his lucky tie.”
