º«¹úÂãÎè announces coaching change in men's soccer

MONTREAL - David Simon has stepped down from his part-time post as head coach of the º«¹úÂãÎè men's soccer team to focus on his day job as a crown prosecutor in Montreal.Ìý A 38-year-old native of Paris, France, who previously played for the Redmen, Simon guided º«¹úÂãÎè to an overall 34-21-9 record in three seasons, including a 20-10-6 mark in league play. He was named coach of the year in the Quebec-based RSEQ conference last season and guided the Redmen to a fifth-place finish at the CIS championship tournament in Victoria, B.C. He also led º«¹úÂãÎè to a CIS silver medal in 2009.

Jose-Luis Valdes will take over the head coaching duties for the winter indoor season, which begins on Jan. 15. The 31-year-old native of Montreal was a goalkeeper for the Redmen from 2001 to 2004 and has also served the past 11 seasons as an assistant coach with the º«¹úÂãÎè women's team, helping the Martlets win five conference titles. Valdes, who is fluent in English, French and Spanish, graduated from º«¹úÂãÎè in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in physical and health education. He served as a coach with the Quebec Soccer Federation from 2002 to 2010 and holds a national B coaching license from the Canadian Soccer Association.

The Redmen coaching staff for the 2012 fall outdoor campaign will be finalized in the spring.
