Labonté, Bielby named º«¹úÂãÎè athletes of the week

MONTREAL – Charline Labonté of Boisbriand, Que., and Steven Bielby
of Pointe Claire, Que., are the º«¹úÂãÎè athletes of the
week for the period ending Feb. 8, 2009.
Labonté, an All-Canadian goaltender with the hockey Martlets and a
member of the nation women’s team, kicked aside 46 of 47 shots over
the weekend, earning a pair of victories and her Quebec university
record 50th career shutout. The 5-foot-8 physical education junior
improved her regular season record to 11-0 with seven shutouts. She
has allowed just five goals on 182 shots for a CIS-leading 0.45
goals-against average and .973 save percentage.
Bielby, a 19-year-old electrical engineering freshman, won three
gold medals and three silvers at the Quebec university swim
championships hosted by º«¹úÂãÎè over the weekend. The 5-foot-7
middle distance specialist also received QSSF conference
rookie-of-the-year and athlete-of-the-year honours. Bielby finished
atop the podium in the 400-metre freestyle (4:00.11), the 400
individual medley (4:25.29) and swam the third leg of the winning
4x50 freestyle relay (1:34.14). The product of John Abbott College
placed second in the 200 butterfly, the 1500 freestyle and the
4x100 freestyle relay.
