Him-Lazarenko and Vossen named º«¹úÂãÎè athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Anneth Him-Lazarenko of Laval, Que., and Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask., are the º«¹úÂãÎè athletes of the week for the period ending Jan.16, 2011.

Him-Lazarenko, a 5-foot-10 forward on the women's basketball team, scored 34 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in two games - a win over Concordia and a loss at Laval - for the Martlets last weekend. The 23-year-old education junior shot 48 per cent from the field (14-for-29) and went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. She added a pair of assists, two blocked shots and an equal number of steals. Her best effort was a "double-double" in the 72-61 victory over Concordia last Thursday, registering game-highs in points (22) and rebounds (10). She joined the Martlets in 2008 after graduating from Vanier College.

Vossen, a six-foot, 195-pound left-winger on the men's hockey team, scored twice and added a helper in º«¹úÂãÎè's lone game, a 5-4 victory over the visiting Carleton Ravens before a capacity crowd of 1,355 at McConnell Arena last Friday. The 24-year-old industrial relations senior assisted on º«¹úÂãÎè's first goal midway through the first period to tie the score at 1-1, then knotted the score at 2-2 at 14:12 of the middle period and tallied what proved to be the game-winner with just 52 seconds remaining in the final stanza. Vossen, the team captain, has already matched his career best season for goals (14) and owns a 53-52-105 record in 157 lifetime contests overall. A product of the La Ronge Ice Wolves he previously graduated from Swift Current Comprehensive high school.
