Bielby golden at CIS swim championships

CALGARY - º«¹úÂãÎè swimmer Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., has won gold on opening day of the CIS championships, a three-day meet hosted by the University of Calgary.


Bielby, a 21-year-old electrical engineering junior, won the men's 400-metre individual medley, touching the wall in four minutes, 13.60 seconds.Ìý The 5-foot-8 middle distance specialist finished well ahead of silver medalist David Dimitrov from the University of Calgary, who was clocked at 4:17.33.

Bielby now owns five CIS gold medals over his three years at º«¹úÂãÎè, breaking the school career record held by Francois Castonguay (two golds in 2005 and two more in 2006). Bielby also owns a silver and a couple of bronze medals forÌý eight CIS medals overall, the second-highest career total ever by a º«¹úÂãÎè male swimmer, behind Alexandre Pichette's 10 (2 golds, 3 silvers, 5 bronzes) and equal to the eight previously won by David Allard (1-1-6).
