Bielby and Mateus named º«¹úÂãÎè - Olde Orchard athletes of the week

MONTREAL --ÌýSteven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., andÌýKaiva Mateus of Montreal West, Que., are the º«¹úÂãÎè - Ye Olde Orchard athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 12, 2012.

Bielby, who measures 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds, won six medals, four of them golden to go along with a pair of silvers as º«¹úÂãÎè finished second in the men's division of the Quebec university swim championships in Trois-Rivieres, over the weekend. The 22-year-old electrical engineering senior racked up 759 points on the FINA scale. He won the 400-metre freestyle (3:57.51), the 400 individual medley (4:25.85), the 1500 freestyle (15:50.28) and also anchored the winning 4x100 freestyle relay (3:28.94). A product of John Abbott College, he earned all-conference honours and was named swimmer of the year in the five-team Quebec league.

Mateus, a 6-foot-1 all-star middle blocker with the volleyball Martlets, racked up 40 kills, 21 stuff blocks, 14 digs and four aces in 14 sets as º«¹úÂãÎè upset No.7-ranked Laval, the defending CIS silver-medallists, 2-1 in the Quebec conference best-of-three semifinal series last week. It marked º«¹úÂãÎè's first-ever playoff series victory over Laval, which will miss the CIS championship for only the second time in 21 years. º«¹úÂãÎè, on the other hand, has qualified to play at the CIS tourney for only the second time in school history. Mateus, a 22-year-old psychology senior, was also named last week as the RSEQ volleyball nominee for leadership and community service. She is a product of Dawson College.
