This documentary film showcases one of the most exciting
adventures in sound recording, carried out right here at .
Applying “virtual acoustics” for the first time in the history of
recording, this film recreates the pitches and perils of
all 14 hours of Haydn’s works for solo keyboard on seven historical
keyboards, in nine “virtual rooms.”
Playing the Room follows the making of
the instruments, the acoustical mapping of the rooms and the actual
recording of the works in the Immersive Presence Laboratory
at ’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media
and Technology. Three specialists are key: Tom
Beghin, Tonmeister-producer Martha de Francisco and sound engineer
Wieslaw Woszczyk. Enter a fascinating world of sound and
architecture, where the newest technologies combine with the
greatest expertise and love of music. The film will be introduced
by keyboard artist and musicologist Tom Beghin.
Running time: 104 minutes. Spoken in English (and occasional
French, German, and Dutch), with subtitles in French.
