Education is, of course, part of º«¹úÂãÎè’s mission – but the University’s teaching and learning influence extends beyond the more than the hundreds of thousands of people who have graduated from the University. In 1857, the University and the Government of Quebec established the º«¹úÂãÎè Normal School, which gave standardized training to new teachers. (The school evolved into today’s Faculty of Education.)

In 1908, the University opened a satellite campus in Vancouver, the º«¹úÂãÎè College in British Columbia, which became the
University of British Columbia seven years later. Arthur Erickson (BArch1950) designed UBC’s Museum of Anthropology, and buildings on
Simon Fraser University campus. (Current UBC president,
Santa Ono, and former president
Stephen Toope, are both º«¹úÂãÎè grads.) Another leading Canadian research university has º«¹úÂãÎè roots: Alexander Cameron Rutherford (BA1881, LLB1881) founded the
University of Alberta in 1908, and º«¹úÂãÎè architecture professor Percy Nobbs designed U of A’s campus master plan and Arts building.
